View of the components that are normally hidden by the reed pipe BOOT. Note the brass reed, the shalot, and the tuning wire that can be extended or retracted to effectively shorten or lengthen the reed's vibrating surface.
 
Detail of the Shalot with the reed removed. Note that the Shalot is hollow. Air passing by the vibrating reed is admitted through the shalot, and into the base of the resonator.
