The standard for telephone cable is as follows (1 through 50):

 

White/Blue (WIDE White stripe, narrow Blue stripe/commonly referred to as "TIP")

In cables of more than 25 pairs (50 wires), the first bundle will typically be "bound" with

White and Blue plastic strips or cloth threads.  The second would be bound with

White and Orange, and so on.....see a pattern here?...  There are other variations

for binders in some specialty cables, but normal "voice" cable will follow the above

pattern.

 

Beware of Red/Brown and Brown/Red as some cable manufacturers colors are not very

distinct.
