THE EDGAR ALLEN POE MUSEUM

The Edgar Allen Poe Museum, resides in the Jacob Ege house which is the oldest house in Richmond. It was built in 1738-39 and was also known as "the Old Stone House". Ege's descendants occupied the property until 1864. After that date, it was rented and it became a curio shop. Although it once held a sign declaring it Washington's headquarters, it was never actually used for that purpose. In an auction in 1911, it was purchased by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. In 1922, it was opened as a shrine to Edgar Allen Poe.
